Fraudsters are using AI-generated voice clones of CEOs, owners, and attorneys to call accounts-payable staff and authorize urgent wire transfers. The voices sound convincing on a quick phone call — especially when the caller claims to be traveling or in a meeting.
Who is affected
Construction, real estate, legal, medical practice management, and any Florida business where one person can approve large outbound payments by phone.
Why it matters
Voice cloning removed the last informal check many SMBs relied on — recognizing a manager's voice. One successful call can exceed the cost of years of IT security investment.
Recommended actions
- Require callback verification on a known published number before any wire or ACH change — never call back a number the caller provides.
- Use a documented payment-approval process with two-person verification above a set dollar threshold.
- Train staff that urgency and secrecy ('do not tell accounting') are fraud red flags, even when the voice sounds right.
- Report attempts to your bank and IT provider immediately so credentials and mailboxes can be reviewed.
